It's an important flashback but it's long. It was a weird place for it because the flashback establishes the setting for the outside world while we are still getting to know the small secluded town Mamoru lives in. I think the second chapter was a long flashback thrown in just when we were getting to know Mamoru. If you like epic fight scenes that last then this is the book for you! Issues I had with the story are minor. It is the whole middle section of the book. It's not like 2 pages and the fight is over. The fight scenes were so vividly written. The other narration is one of the adults who is deeply flawed and fascinating to follow. Just when I thought this was going to be a typical child prodigy protagonist who can seemingly do anything.

I loved that we got narration from 2 people. It is a rollercoaster ride with these characters start to end. The 3rd part is the aftermath, grief and rebuilding. Plot armor? Forget it, these characters go through hell and you feel it. My goodness, Wang knows how to write a fight scene. The second part is the "war.'' It was almost cinematic the way it was written.

The first part sets up the story, Builds up the characters, the world and magic system. When the winds of war reach their peninsula, will the Matsuda family have the strength to defend their empire? Or will they tear each other apart before the true enemies even reach their shores? But with her growing son asking questions about the outside world, the threat of an impending invasion looming across the sea, and her frigid husband grating on her nerves, Misaki finds the fighter in her clawing its way back to the surface.

Determined to be a good housewife and mother, she hid away her sword, along with everything from her days as a fighter in a faraway country. Misaki told herself that she left the passions of her youth behind when she married into the Matsuda house. Worse, the empire he was bred to defend may stand on a foundation of lies. But when an outsider arrives and pulls back the curtain on Kaigen's alleged age of peace, Mamoru realizes that he might not have much time to become the fighter he was bred to be. For hundreds of years, the fighters of the Kusanagi Peninsula have held the Empire's enemies at bay, earning their frozen spit of land the name "The Sword of Kaigen".īorn into Kusanagi's legendary Matsuda family, f14-year-old Mamoru has always known his purpose: To master his family's fighting techniques and defend his homeland. On a mountainside at the edge of the Kaigenese Empire live the most powerful warriors in the world, superhumans capable of raising the sea and wielding blades of ice.
